Hasbro's Star Wars the Black Series line hasn't had my attention as of late as it used to have, which may be attributed to several other toylines pulling me up and other toylines giving me more of what I want whereas a lot of recent Black Series offerings haven't entirely been tailored towards me. However, 2024 looks to be a banger of a year so far with a heavy focus on the prequels which I will always be excited about, but being that there are pipelined characters and creatures I've been wanting for a while, as this is all just a taste of what we're getting this year! So with 2024 rolling through into March already, these are my top 5 most anticipated Black Series releases of the year!
5. Anakin and Padme (Phantom Menace)
For a while I've been wanting the Phantom Menace versions of Anakin and Padme, and especially more Padme figures as she has so many iconic looks through the series! The kid Anakin looks good; however, while I'm happy to have the character in the line I can't help but think such a small figure could've done with a few more accessories like his Pod racing helmet or Naboo starfighter helmet. Padme's figure looks spot on with the colors and details of the costume, and the designers said the final headsculpt will look more like Natalie Portman in the final product as well. While at the bottom of my most anticipated list, both are still characters/designs I'm looking forward to adding to the display.
4. Hammerhead (Pipeline)
From childhood the Hammerhead alien has been my favorite of the random aliens in the Star Wars galaxy that we see in the background. I went through at least three figures of this guy just because I'd play so rough, leave him outside, or in some other situation where a new one would be needed. When we got Ondar last year it was only a matter of time before this awesome alien was brought into the Black Series proper as Momaw Nadon, and hopefully this pipeline reveal before long becomes a true release!
3. Emperor Palpatine (Revenge of the Sith - pipeline)
Another pipeline reveal that should release this year (hopefully) is the Revenge of the Sith version of Palpatine! While the Return of the Jedi version is great, we've gotten that at least three separate times now and we are far overdue for my personal version of Palpatine in the line! There's a few different routes they could go with this figure. With the line never having a pre-deformed Palpatine I could see them going with the regular McDiarmid headsculpt; however, swappable heads would be the dream. Either way, I will be more than happy to have a Palpatine to go along with my Mace Windu and Kit Fisto as well as Anakin.
2. Ki Adi Mundi
We've been waiting on this figure for a looooong time. When he was revealed last year and announced for a 2024 release I thought there must have been a mistake giving that he was revealed at the BEGINNING of 2023, but no, we've now entered 2024 and still don't have a preorder for this figure! We've seen a similar thing recently with Thrawn based on the Ahsoka series who has a projected release of 2025?? Hopefully these reveals with long waits don't become a standard. I'm still eagerly awaiting the release of one of my favorite prequel era Jedi, who by the pictures we've been staring at for a year looks splendid.
1. Super Battle Droid and Droideka
Undoubtedly these two are the big ones for me and there's no other figures they can reveal this year that would top my anticipation for FINALLY getting the Super Battle Droid and Droideka into the line! There's really no excuse I can think of for why these two iconic designs have not been introduced in the line already, but they're finally on their way and looking gorgeous. Until I get them both in hand I won't know for sure how the articulation works or their full range of posing, but based on the pictures alone both look absolutely stellar from a sculpting standpoint and will fill in two desperately empty slots in the collection that have been waiting years to be filled.
