Top 5 things I expect to see in Mcfarlane's DC Multiverse line in 2023
Taking a break from our look back at 2022, I want to focus on 2023 and what I think we could likely see from Mcfarlane's DC Multiverse line! It has been exponentially growing through the years, with the character selection absolutely unpredictable at times (Who would've expected that Frankenstein figure?) and the future seemingly open for any character and design to be introduced to the line. There's a few characters and designs I'm expecting to see this year, and here is my ranking of those 5 ideas!
Honorable Mention 1: Aquaman 2 and The Flash movie figures
It is pretty much a given that we are going to get figures based on the upcoming films so I won't even include these as part of the main five I will be discussing below. At this point it is standard that any new movie release gets figures to accompany it, and while Shazam! 2's figure representation is much smaller than I was expecting, I have no doubts we'll get plenty of figures for Aquaman, Black Manta, Flash, and Batman when these two DCEU films roll out.
Honorable mention 2: Plenty more Batman
It wouldn't be another year of Mcfarlane DC Multiverse without plenty of Batman figures. That just makes sense from a business stand point, as Batman sells, so naturally we see lots of Batman figures! I think the line is much more balanced out than it was at the start, and the number of non-Batman and obscure DC characters we get increases more and more each year. We're already seeing plenty of Batman figures coming soon in 2023 with the Kingdom Come figure, Gladiator, and Hush (blue), and there's still so many more designs from the comics to knock out such as Red Son, Sinestro Corps, Justice League 3000, Gaslight, and New 52!
5. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Just like how we got a wave of figures for the Gotham Knights videogame, I'm expecting we will get something similar for the Suicide Squad videogame coming out this year. It looks like a ton of fun from what we've seen so far, and the designs for the titular foursome of characters we can play as would be great in action figure form. Deadshot, Boomerang, King Shark, and Harley Quinn. I also would not mind at all to get some of the Justice League in figure form, especially The Flash!
4. Kingdom Come Superman
We don't get nearly as many Supermen in the line as we do Batmen; however, we still do get quite a lot of Superman variants and with Mcfarlane now dipping his toes into the Kingdom Come storyline with the upcoming Batman figure, I hope we get one of Superman's most iconic Elseworlds designs too! Just the logo with the black base is enough for most fans to recognize the Kingdom Come Superman, but the aged head and less built physique would not only be a great Superman figure for the shelf but I can easily slot it in alongside Jay Garrick and any other JSA members they make for a Thy Kingdom Come display!
3. Red and Green Robin variant
When the Amazon exclusive red suited Tim Drake Robin was revealed it was very clear that there were alternate intentions for the mold later on down the line. When looking at the bicep sculpt you could see the clear sculpting of a sleeve cuff indicating that at some point down the line we'll be getting the typical red and green suit with bare arms below the short sleeves. Adding further evidence to this is that the signature "R" does not form fit to the oval sculpt, instead appearing as a round circle, another instance of the Red suit being made to fit a mold meant for something else down the line!
2. Death of the Superman anniversary - Cyborg Superman, Steel, Doomsday
DC clearly knew that it was a big anniversary for the original death of big blue, and while Mcfarlane hasn't said anything specific it seems as though he may know as well and be celebrating it in his own way. We're getting the Eradicator and Conner's Superboy early this year, and while it is their more modern depictions it is still a hefty coincidence that they're both coming out around the anniversary of the Death of Superman storyline. I would bet we'll see more iconic characters from the story such as Cyborg Superman and Steel to round out the original four from Reign of the Supermen, and possibly even a Doomsday to go along with it all!
1. Impulse
I have been absolutely loving all of the speedster love we have been getting in the line, with multiples variations of Barry, Wally, Wallace, and Jay now all in the collection! One character we're missing any kind of figure for though at this point is Bart, but at the rate we've been going with Flash and his supporting cast I wouldn't be surprised at all for an Impulse figure to be revealed very soon. His red and white costume would be an awesome new sculpt in the line, especially if they perfect his wild hair, and the door is absolutely open for a possible Inertia repaint later down the line!
