Top 5 favorite Star Wars the Black Series figures of 2022

The Star Wars Black Series line from Hasbro has been pushing along, with last year certainly finding itself dominated by Mandalorian, Obi Wan Kenobi, Clone Wars, and Bad Batch content in particular. I'm not complaining, as there were plenty of great figures throughout the year, and as usual, these five I'm about to list off are my personal favorites of 2022!

Honorable Mention: Clone Wars Mace Windu
Largely a re-use of the pre-existing Mace Windu figure, but it works. Another Jedi to add to the shelf will never be a bad thing, and the addition of the robe and Clone Wars armor give Mace an awesome new look to match the Tartakovsky cartoon. The soft goods work well, and it is nice and easy to get him into plenty of dynamic poses. My only wish is that he would've included a splayed Force-using hand; however, it isn't in The Black Series' style to include alternate hands anyways.

5. Ben Kenobi (Tibidon Station)
While I'm waiting for the Jabiim version of Obi Wan to come out, the outfit I really want from the series, the Tibidon station look is one I'm very happy to have on the shelf. It is a repaint of the general Obi Wan figure based on the series, but the blue and darker browns pop so much more, and the base figure itself is already great with fantastic articulation and sculpt, not to mention a headsculpt that nails Ewan. The accessories really help elevate the figure as well, with a working backpack that you can store things within, and a soft goods cloak which can be cumbersome at times but looks great when you set it straight.

A welcome addition to the Obi Wan Kenobi display was the loader droid: Ned-B. While he had no speaking lines during his time on screen, from his first scenes I was invested in Ned and I loved his hulking but quiet persona. From a design stand point he is perfect for an action figure with colors that pop, and an obvious Star Wars aesthetic that makes him feel as though he could fit easily into the original trilogy. Equipped with the blaster from his final moments (flinging Stormtroopers several feet back with one toss like a champ) as well as the hammer he unfortunately did not get to crack any skulls with, Ned-B was one of my most anticipated figures from the line last year.

3. Death Watch Mandalorian
While it was not an integral character to the Mandalorian series, it is a figure I was happy to have in the collection, especially with how well it came out. Bringing an all new sculpt to the line for the Mandalorian faction, these Death Watch warriors have a vibrant blue color scheme and a very satisfying articulation scheme layout that makes it very easy to have fun posing them around.

One of the smartest ideas Hasbro has had in a while was the way that they handled the Bith band in order to get us every band members without using up several slots in the line releasing the same figure with different instruments. Instead, we get Nalan Cheel as a deluxe who includes the larger instruments, and Figrin himself as a standard figure release with the multiple "flute" instruments. So one Nalan Cheel, and a few cheaper Figrins later and we have the Bith band who look perfect when all posed together with their individual instruments! For sure one of the best army builder figures in years!

1. Saw Gerrera
Topping off my list for the year is a character I've been waiting years for. Just like Bodhi Rook, Saw Gerrera was noticeably missing from the toyline roll out for Rogue One, but that absence has finally been rectified. Released as a deluxe figure, Saw's Black Series debut is a faithful production of his look from one of my favorite films in the Star Wars saga. He has all of the sculpted detail to his busy, asymmetrical, patch work suit that does a great job in giving us one of the best figures in the line as well as finally round out the Rogue One main cast.
