Top 5 favorite DC Comics publications of 2022
2022 was a bit of the mixed bag when it came to the comic publications from DC Comics. There were some really great comics that came out, plenty of beautiful artwork, great character developments, and introductions of new storylines, characters, and ideas that made me excited to pick up new comics each week! While there were also a fair share of disappointments and comics that fell flat, I'll be focusing solely on those DC comics from last year that really fulfilled why I'm a huge fan of comic books! With dozens of comic series to choose from, here is my narrowed down list of my personal top 5 DC Comics of 2022!
Honorable mention: Danger Street
With only one issue released in December of 2022, Danger Street already seemed poised to be one of the best comic series I've read in a long time. Not just the concept, but the history behind it had me very excited to see how it would play out, and I even found and read the original DC's First Issue Specials comic series to know what Danger Street was drawing upon. While knowing the history and characters has a huge bump in my enjoyment of the first issue, the story itself has easily pulled me in with clear stakes set by the end of issue 1, and I wouldn't be surprised if my "best of 2023" list includes the rest of Danger Street!
5. Aquaman/Green Arrow: Deep Target
This was a comic series I unfortunately passed on when the single issues were being released, but after borrowing the collected edition from a friend and finally reading it I found myself extremely entertained and happy I got around to the series. The overall plot was a very fun situation and the exploration of the relationship between Arthur and Oliver was a delight to read, as the characters themselves even acknowledge that they don't interact very often. I don't want to spoil too much from the series as finding out what it was actually about was half the fun for me, so all I can do is include it here on my list and recommend you check it out!
4. Rogues
A Black Label comic centering around the final heist of the Rogues was a great concept and one that I was very happy with in execution! While I was sad that Boomerang and Weather Wizard, my two favorite Rogues, were not included it was still a great cast line up and the way the characters were written to interact with one another in their older age was half the fun. Add into that an industrial Gorilla City with mob boss Grodd as the focal antagonists, and the all out crazy stakes that take place during the final two issues and you have one of the best Rogues storylines out there.
3. Robin
Coming to an end last year was the Robin run that began with the Infinite Frontier, following Damian as he goes through some self discovery and meets new colleagues along with his grandmother, Mother Soul! I was beyond let down when I heard that this comic was coming to an end because it has certainly been one of the best comic series that I've read from DC lately! Seeing Damien grow and learn to work more healthily alongside others was a true delight, and his relationships with characters like Flatline and Hawke are ones I hope to see continue on in the future! The colors and artwork in this comic never disappointed, and it introduced me to Lord Death Man who is easily one of my favorite DC characters now!
2. The Flash
I hope the Flash comics never end, and they never look to end, so I'm very happy about that! Wally is back in the drivers set as the main Flash leading the title and his storylines have been nothing but perfect since the start! 2022 brought us the end of the epic Eclipso storyline, and then let us breath a bit with some lighthearted, but extremely entertaining, storylines featuring Wally taking on Wallace (now 'Ace') as a sidekick, taking part in a galactic wrestling tournament (I cannot express what a good time reading that comic was), and confronting Warden Wolfe and his deputized Rogues!
1. Suicide Squad: Blaze
There will never be enough that I can say about this Black Label comic series. It is one of my favorite comics of all time, and I've been making everyone I know read it. The art is phenomenal, just one look at any of the pages is like wading into a rich expression of the characters and their world. In interviews I read that real people were posed and used as bases to capture the realistic expressions and poses seen in the comic, and I can really tell that that quality is there. The comic itself is no holds bar either, with the basic plot being that a being who has powers akin to Superman is killing people across the world and the catch is that it isn't some monster or maniacal supervillain, it is just some guy, some crazy out of his mind animalistic guy which makes for one of the scariest villains I've read in a while. Beyond that, the cast that we follow are perfectly written, and the principle character of the series, Mike, makes for a very entertaining narrator. The series is firmly an Elseworlds tell which is very apparent by the second issue after certain deaths take place, and especially by the end with one of the most chilling final lines/panels in any comic I've read. My jumbled rambling does not do this comic justice, and all I can say that for not only one of the best Suicide Squad comics or Black Label comics, but one of the best comics from DC comics, you need to check this book out!
