Ranking the 2020-2021 Mcfarlane DC Multiverse Build-A figures

Over the years that Mcfarlane has had the DC license they've produced a number of Build-A figures similar in concept to what Marvel Legends does, and what Mattel used to do with the DC line. This isn't the norm though and only certain waves of figures that theme together will come with pieces to build an extra figure which is an approach I actually like better because it allows us to buy related characters from a singular storyline or series. There were a total of six different buildable figures from Mcfarlane's designated Build-A waves, and since only two existed in the line's first year I will be combining 2020 with 2021 to rank what I personally felt are the worst to best Build-A figures from Mcfarlane's DC Multiverse line!

6. Batmobile (Wave 1)
It is neat in concept, having the figures build mini Batmobiles that you could line up on the shelf, and back when Mcfarlane was going to go for this idea I  was welcome to it. Getting true figures and characters though is what I, and the majority, prefer and it seems like Mcfarlane got that message since after that first Batmobile he started doing characters as the buildable figures in waves. It isn't a bad mini Batmobile by any stretch, but it does pale in comparison to getting true action figures.

5. Darkfather (Death Metal)
I think this figure is okay. It's got a lot of great detailing from the symbol on the suit to the texture of the skin; however, I wasn't a very big fan of this character in the comics. Supposedly a combo of Batman and Darkseid, he went out like a wimp and was barely in more than two pages so him getting to be the Build-A figure for the Death Metal wave still astounds me. It is a faithful adaptation of the design, but again, the design itself doesn't do much for me either.

4. Bane (The Last Knight on Earth)
The Last Knight on Earth Build-A wave was the first one that really grabbed me, and started off 2021 running as it was a storyline I really enjoyed, and included all of the characters I hoped it would! Having this Bane on the shelf with Scarecrow mounted on his back is an awesome centerpiece to that storyline, with the size of the figure itself pretty impressive! All that holds it back is issues that's plagued everyone's copy, being the hands never want to stay pegged in, the legs are essentially impossible to raise at the hip, but overall it is a beast of a hunk of plastic!

3. Merciless (Dark Knights Metal)
This was the first real Build-A figure in the line and came with a great assortment of figures included the Infected Superman whose mold is one of the best in the line! Talking about the figure itself though, the blue coloring of the figure is vibrant and beautiful to look at, with all the details on the armor itself very precise and sharp! The sword itself is loaded with sculpted detailing, and the figure makes for a mighty presence alongside the rest of the Dark Knights!

2. King Shark (The Suicide Squad)
I was as excited as could be when I saw the wave of figures for the latest The Suicide Squad movie, and having them build King Shark was the perfect choice! The figure is pretty much exactly what we see on the screen and has lots of great qualities! The texture of the skin and the proportions are spot on, with the character's headsculpt possibly the best thing about the figure especially when the engineering for the jaw is taken into account! Mcfarlane managed to sculpt it so that you could have both a teeth barred open maw, and a simple open mouth without the teeth for more casual poses. Articulation is definitely hindered, especially where the legs are concerned, but we're able to lift his arm in a "Hand!" pose and that's all I could've asked for.

1. Batman/Joker - Futures End (Batman Beyond)
This figure came with a new experiment Mcfarlane wanted to try with their Build-A waves. Instead of releasing all together, each figure released a few months apart throughout the year in a bid to help fans get their hands on each figure more easily. I feel like I've never had trouble finding the figures for each wave whether it be online or in stores, but it was an interesting trial by Mcfarlane and ended up giving us one of the most surprising and welcome waves in the line so far! The Batman Beyond wave includes several more obscure characters that I didn't expect to see in the line, such as Batwoman Beyond and Blight from the Rebirth Era, Shriek who is for sure one of my favorite 2021 figures, and the epic Build-A Batman/Joker from Futures End! While that storyline had its ups and downs, I definitely liked the Terry portion of the story in which he was hounded by this sadistic cyborg made up of the fused Batman and Joker bodies. The figure is packed with mechanical detailing, the "wings" on the back are sharp, expansive, and very posable; and speaking of posing, this is the most posable Build-A figure from those first two years by far!
