Top 5 things I want to see in Sonic the Hedgehog 3
We already know thanks to the post credit scene that the third film will be introducing legendary Sonic anti-hero Shadow into the mix. Beyond him, with Sonic now having his friend group in place I think it is time to introduce his primary love interest as well. Amy would round out that core cast of Sonic characters from the games and television series, whether Sonic himself would be happy to see her or not! Alongside Shadow's debut in the games we were also introduced to Rogue the Bat who would fit in perfectly with movie's already having established the GUN organization that she commonly works for. Her saucy dynamic with Knuckles in Sonic Adventures 2 could provide a fun storyline for them both.
4. Shadow's backstory
As faithful as the games have been so far I doubt this is something that will be skipped out on, but Shadow's backstory is one of the most tragic portions of the character's lore and really helps to make him who he is. Gerald Robotnik's testing and experimentation could provide a whole new level of evil to the Robotnik bloodline, while Maria's influence on Shadow and her eventual death is a major event in the character's formation that cannot be left out!
3. Robotnik's use of animal power, and the real world impact of Jim Carrey's retirement
Now that I've mentioned Robotnik, it is as good a time as any to mention how Jim Carrey has stepped back from acting following this movie. Eggman is a fixture of the Sonic franchise, and I'm very cautiously curious about how the franchise will handle the actor's retirement in terms of a storytelling stand point. Carrey has stated that as long as the script is good enough he would consider coming back for another movie, and he seems to have genuine fun with these films so fingers crossed we haven't seen the end of Carrey's Robotnik! If he doesn't come back, perhaps we will see Gerald Robotnik brought into present day as a living threat? As an aside, one thing from the games that I would like to see regarding Robotnik as well is his use of animals to power his robots, seen throughout nearly every Sonic game!
2. Chao and Chaos
With the introduction of the Chaos emeralds, I would love to see them explored in further depth along with the lore behind them. While the Master Emerald was reformed at the end of the film, the individual emeralds clearing were scattered and I wonder whether the brunt of the third film will revolve around the heroes and villains searching for them, similar to Shadow's debut game, Sonic Adventures 2. The villains' misuse of the emeralds could easily pave the way for the iconic Chaos to be introduced, and Grogu from The Mandalorian could easily have some heavy competition if the movies get into the Chao who are adorable beyond belief!
Shadow has always been an anti-hero in the Sonic universe, and the ending of his debut game saw he and Sonic both going "Super" to face Robotnik's "Ultimate Lifeform" in one of the most epic moments in the franchise's history! So I doubt that the third film will make Shadow the full villain for the entirety, and we could see a Batman v Superman scenario play out where a greater threat unites Shadow and Sonic by the end. That perfect threat could be the introduction of the robotic Sonic clone which has seen multiple iterations throughout the years! Whether built by Robotnik himself, or by Stone following Robotnik's designs, the villain's possession of one of Sonic's quills could be the perfect power source for this iconic Sonic villain to join the fray!
