Top 5 most wanted Mcfarlane DC Multiverse figures based on The Dark Knight Returns comic series vol 2
I knew it was only a matter of time until Mcfarlane got around to the Dark Knight Returns seeing as it is one of the most popular Batman centric storylines of all time, and they knocked a lot of the primary characters out in one fell swoop as a wave all together! In addition to the armored Batman that we already had, we now have Joker, Carrie Kelley, Superman, and standard Batman all based on this great comic and all looking great. The standard Batman is by far my favorite among the bunch but Superman's beefier, stockier design comes in at a close second. With this big dive into the Returns universe I'm hoping Mcfarlane won't forget about it soon because there are several more characters I'd like to see next from this universe, and I'll kick my top 5 off with a familiar character!
The less said about The Dark Knight Strikes Again the better, but The Master Race really brought things back around for me and delivered a solid story that made the Dark Knight Returns universe great once again! Carrie Kelley was in a much more confident, prominent role as Batgirl, a full on partner to Batman who had long outgrown her Robin moniker. I loved this matured take on the character that made it feel like she was truly growing!
Introduced in Dark Knight Strikes Again as one of the only parts I could stomach, Lara's storyline stretching throughout the 2nd and 3rd books in this universe were a delight to read. Her downward spiral towards villainy throughout the 3rd book was a tough pill to swallow as she opposed her father and the other heroes, but seeing her begin to come around and see the error of her ways was great.
Mattel brought this design to the action figure realm once already but another go around would be appreciated, and Wonder Woman is another character that I think really excelled in this universe after her introduction! Just like Lara, the 3rd book in the series really knew what to do with the character and conveyed her in a better light than the 2nd, giving us a great version of Diana in the gritty, grim world that had been built.
Speaking of the grim and gritty world, Barry Allen still managed to retain a lot of his light and injected that into the series after his introduction. Seeing him plowed by the Kryptonians in the 3rd book was painful to read, but his continued optimism made him a great opposing energy to the rest of the characters. I also like his design a lot in the series, the black and yellow being a big departure and something new, with the shorts another aspect that is specific and unique to this iteration of the character.
This is the only character to cross over from the previous list, and to be honest I'm still scratching my head over why Mcfarlane decided to go with a horse as the Build A figure from the first wave, and not the Mutant Leader to nicely put a bow on the first book in the series. One of the most iconic elseworlds characters of all time, the Mutant Leader lead the disgusting, oppressive Mutant gang of Gotham and was involved in one of Batman's most brutal, bare knuckled fights of all time. I would love to see Mcfarlane bring this revolting character to life in figure form once again to go along with the rest of the set!
