Batwoman S01 EP16 spoiler review

Batwoman's latest episode pushed some major new advancements in the story of Kate and Alice, while also dealing with the fallout of last week's events alongside the tease of a bigger villain coming to Gotham. Here is my review for Batwoman's 16th episode before the break!

Sophie was back after sitting out last week's episode and found herself the target of an assassination attempt, in which she was aided and saved by Julia who has returned after several episodes of being absent. It was fun to see her again, though it took me a bit to remember who exactly she was until she reintroduced herself. Julia had taken a shot herself, and the two of them ventured to Mary's hospital where the was patched back up.

Concerning Mary, her chunk of the episode involved her supporting Luke as his father's killer faced a retrial and was allowed to go free until another conviction could come through. This understandably stabbed him deep, seeing his father's killer go free, and Luke ultimately confronted Reggie Harris out on the streets himself about the death of his father. It lead to a really nice conversation between the two where Reggie tried to explain he wasn't the murderer and that it was pinned on him, while also telling Luke how that night in the store Lucius had been announcing to everyone about Luke's MIT acceptance and how much he would aid the world. It felt great seeing Luke get emotional after hearing the story about his father, but the feel good moment was cut down when Reggie was shot and killed by some unseen assassin. Luke later found Mary in her hospital, admitting that he now believed Reggie innocent.

The main plot followed up on last week's shocking events in which Kate killed Cartwright. Alice aid her and Jacob in burying the body, and then blackmails her family with the fact that she could rat them out to the authorities about Cartwright's murder with evidence of their dna all over his corpse. This buys her amnesty to saddle herself up to Kate as they work to find Mouse who is hunting down his former Arkham Asylum nurses though gets himself locked up again in the process. Alice convinces Kate to help her break into Arkham and retrieve Mouse with the ruling that no one is to die, which Alice surprisingly abides by and refrains from killing even when she wants to and Kate isn't around. They find Mouse, though as Alice is fiddling with his restraints Kate shuts the door of his cell on the both of them, revealing that she and their father had conspired to get her locked up the whole time. Alice begs Kate not to leave her, but ends up in a cell all her own by the end declaring that she wishes to be the queen rather than a prisoner. Jacob also informs Kate that he moved Cartwright's body, so that Alice has nothing to blackmail them with.

The final moments of the episode saw Kate drinking away her sorrows with the feeling that she was becoming more and more like Alice since she felt no remorse when she killed. Julia took a seat beside her to keep her company, and the two began to kiss. Meanwhile, Jacob found himself under fire from a rifleman that he then manages to take down, though killing him before any information could be obtained. Was this the same man who shot after Sophie and Reggie?

So another big change up for the relationships of the show. Kate is now seemingly in a relationship with Julia which will hopefully mean a bit of a reprieve from her endless pining over Sophie, while it seems like Mary and Luke are edging closer and closer to a relationship of their own. Alice and Kate seemed to be making good headway, but with the seemingly official lock up of Alice it seems that relationship is in shambles...though Kate has attempted to let Alice die before and they came back from that so we'll see how long they stay mad at each other. A big moment though I wanted to touch upon was the start of the episode when Alice finds her headquarters in shambles with all of her followers dead, along with a message from Coryana. It has been a hot minute since Safiyah was mentioned on the show and this seems to be the second hint the season has given us towards the Many Arms of Death. I found out recently too that the Rifle actually wasn't a made up villain for the show but a member of Safiyah's organization in the comics which is even more precedent towards the organization being set up. Whether they're being saved for a season 2 big bad approach, or will be abruptly introduced as the climax of this season remains to be seen; however, I'm really interested in seeing a new big storyline that isn't the same will she wont she of Alice's relationship with Kate and becoming good. Kate and Alice can go back and forth only so many times before it gets repetitious, and introducing a true big bad for Kate to oppose would be new energy for the show!
