Batwoman S01 EP18 spoiler review
Batwoman's latest episode did a lot for furthering the story of the season it seemed, or at least having something built towards including a new storyline for Alice to follow while in jail. We also got a major great set up for an iconic Batman foe taking on his full comic book appearance! A lot to talk about, so I'll head on in!

The episode started off with Batwoman having a great fight scene and breaking up a group of meeting mobsters, though one of the head figures escapes. She returns to the Wayne building where Mary greets her with a celebratory drink, though questions how exactly they celebrate when Kate simply sticks her hands into the ice to soak her knuckles. I thought that was a great moment that was fitting in with Mary's character, while also asking how exactly do superheroes celebrate small victories like that that aren't supervillains? Just another day's work, or do they pat themselves on the back? Kate gets a call from Julia and Sophie who tell her that Tommy's warehouse didn't have Lucius' journal anywhere, and Kate goes to meet with Tommy Elliot herself at Arkham Asylum. He boasts about how he has it hidden, and that he has convinced the staff that he is crazy and therefore incapable of standing trial.
This is no longer the case though when Alice meets Tommy back in his cell, and the doctor (Mouse in disguise) alerts Tommy that he is no longer classified insane and that the Crows will be coming to take him to trial for his crimes. This disguise is revealed to Tommy who is told that Alice and Mouse will help him escape with any identity he wants as long as he helps them, namely by getting them the journal Kate is so interested in. Tommy then revealing that Bruce Wayne is Batman to them and the shocked expressions from the two villains was great, just as fun as Mary's surprised reaction early in the episode.
After intercepting a call between Tommy and an associate at a night club who is revealed to have the journal, Kate announces that she will be going clubbing with a fun dance. She and Julia go the club where Kate runs into her ex Reagan, and I was a bit surprised to see her back. I thought that the character was kind of a waste of time earlier in the season when Kate dated her for only one episode before breaking up and that was it. This episode just seemed like a bit more randomness for the character that I'll get to later. Julia shuts down the lights so Kate can don her Batwoman disguise and search the private quarters of the nightclub. She ends up caught in a trap though while Julia is ambushed by the goons patrolling for security.
Meanwhile in Arkham, the Crows find Tommy Elliot having hung himself in his room only...it isn't Tommy. The real Tommy is in the head doctor's office (currently Mouse) having his head wrapped up by Alice after she removed his face for the trick. That moment there I knew Hush was coming. Tommy calls the man at the nightclub about the journal who says that due to the Bat being interested, he'll keep it for himself; however, Alice decides to release Magpie from the asylum to get it for them. Also in Arkham, Jacob visits Alice only to tell her that all those times she told him Beth was gone he should have listened, and he is done trying to save her. He only has to protect the remaining daughters he has, which I think is a really great scene between the two because even after pushing away for so long, it was obvious it hurt Alice.
Mary convinces Luke to let her go to the club and save Julia and Kate, using her prior history with one of the head figures in the joint to get to the back room where the private auction was going for who would kill the captured Batwoman. Mary helps Kate escape while Julia frees herself, and after fighting for the journal with Magpie Kate manages to acquire it while the escaped criminal vanishes. Afterwards, Kate and Mary have a nice moment of Kate recognizing that Mary really can help out in the field, and she and Reagan then get back together for the night. When Kate wakes up in the normal though, both Reagan and the journal are gone. Reagan is then shown giving the journal to her sister, Magpie, who delivers the book to Alice and Mouse. This was what I was talking about when I said Reagan's story got a bit weird. She's randomly the sister of low-tier villain Magpie, and I guess now knows Kate is Batwoman? The character appears to be used in a very disjointed way this season, and her random reappearance as well as sudden random familial ties are very off the beat.
After a cute scene of Mary being introduced to the batcave by Luke, we get the scene of Alice and Mouse inspecting the journal from Lucius Fox after Magpie and Tommy have both been set free. Turns out, Lucius wrote the entire thing in code which is such a Lucius thing to do, and definitely throws a thorn in their use of the information inside. The last bit of info for the episode involved Julia answering a call from an unknown person and telling them that the journal is out of their hands but will soon be in their possession! Who is this person Julia is talking to and working with? It was stated in the episode that she's been rogue from her association for months now, and that isn't to help Kate because she hasn't been around. Could it be the Safiyah that's been alluded to a couple times now? This seems to be a great mystery in the making!
So overall the episode was a lot of fun and has things set up to take wilder turns next episode. A new mystery with Julia, Mary fully joining the team, Alice and Mouse having their hands on the journal, and Tommy Elliot going full Hush! When he was first introduced I wasn't sure if he was going to do it, but these last two episodes have accelerated that process and the trailer for next week shows he's got the full head wrap, jacket, and double gun action going on! I can't wait to see Hush on the CW!
