Batwoman S01 EP02 spoiler review

Batwoman's second episode has come out and the show seemed to have spent the brunt of it solidifying the characters and relationships we got in episode 1, helping to really concrete the ideas of the season. It also pushed the story forward a bit and it seems that things might be a little different than I anticipated at first, so lets dive on in to Batwoman's second episode of its premiere season!

I'll start off with saying that I really enjoy Kate Kane; she's very grim and devil may care about things. She really does seem to live inside of herself and not rely much on others, which I expect will be something explore more in the season. She's been out fighting crime as Batwoman, who folks are repeatedly mistaking for Batman, and her back up on the field is Luke Fox who surprisingly isn't a complete tech genius like a lot of the supporting characters in these CW shows! We get more of Batwoman's hunt for Alice who she now knows is her lost twin sister Beth, and it definitely pushes that dynamic and storyline forward.

Backtracking a bit though, I want to talk about some stray thoughts I had while watching the episode. Jacob Kane proves to be a really strong character in my opinion, especially with his performances in the flashbacks as he dealt with the loss of his wife and daughter. I also really liked that he surmised that Alice had been at their old house, but not because he believed she is Beth but because he thinks she is trying to mess with him. I thought that was great and really showed his character as someone who will think of the possibilities but not budge from his own beliefs. Another character who got more to do this time around was Kate's step sister, Mary, whose underground clinic actually came into play tonight. One of Alice's people were holed up there after being stabbed by a batarang by Batwoman, who Kate subsequently released in order to send a message to Alice. It was also the site of Alice's second in command trying to kill Mary, who she saw as her replacement as Kate's sister. That gave Mary a great scene later on when she told Kate that she wanted her to tell Alice that she wasn't a threat; and it was great because that was all she could really do. She couldn't go to the police because they would find out about her illegal medical center, so all she has is relying on Kate to get Alice off her back. (Side note, Alice's second in command is also now in Batwoman's custody for interrogation and possibly finding out more about the villainous plot). I thought both of these characters really benefited from tonight's episode.

Like I mentioned before, Luke got his spot as Batwoman's second hand behind the computers which he also discovered tonight, but he didn't have any idea how to use them so it was a neat new spin on the man behind the chair. Usually characters like Cisco and Felicity know how to do everything related to the tech, but Luke audibly tells Kate that he doesn't, and seeing him evolve into knowing the ins and outs of the Batcave tech will be a fun progression. Sophie continued on the same plot she had last week, with Kate obviously still in love with her, and Sophie obviously grappling with her own feelings. No doubt, these two will end up together later on; Sophie's husband wasn't even in the episode so it isn't like the CW is so far making him a strong character to expect to be around. I also liked that Sophie confronted Kate about potentially being Batwoman, which makes sense because of how close their faces got while saving her in last week's episode; and it seems Sophie didn't quite buy Kate's lies about not being the new vigilante.

Circling back around to Kate and the main storyline. After delivering the secret message to Alice about meeting up, we got an awesome scene between Alice and Kate where they just talked, spoke to each other about the accident, the years after, and what Kate planned on doing. Alice's motivations also came into play as she explained that she was lost, abandoned, and forgotten and she wanted her family to feel that same pain that she felt, though those negative feelings seem less focused on Kate than on her father. That's a great motivation for her in my opinion and it is really easy to see how broken she would be after that (I'm also really curious about this event on Miller farm where supposed skull fragments were found of Beth's; where did those come from? Could that have some play in her unhinged mental status?). In no means did Kate convince her lost sister to turn herself in, but she did convince her to give up some of her blood for a DNA test to prove whether or not she was really Beth; however, before that exchange could occur the Crows appeared to kill her. Kate intervened though and managed ot only have her arrested. Of course, things don't go quite right and a bomb blows the police cruiser off of the bridge leaving Alive to die if it hadn't been for Kate swooping in to rescue her in her Batwoman guise. Police interception lets Alice escape though, with the end of the episode seeing a note from Alice to Kate letting her sister know that she knows she is Batwoman.

So overall, I thought the episode did a lot for giving us a better sense of the story and the characters involved. We got clear progression of the main plot with Alice finding out Kate is Batwoman, and Kate trying very hard to prove to everyone else that Alice is Beth. That isn't where things stopped though, because halfway through the episode Kate was jumped by what appeared to be Alice goons who stole the knife that would have proved Alice's identity with a DNA test. Later on Alice proclaimed it wasn't her who sent those goons, and in the end of the episode we find out that it was Kate's stepmother who obviously has more sinister motives. That character barely appeared int he first two episode, but it looks like she'll be playing more of a role later on in the season and with how this episode played out, maybe Alice isn't the overarching big bad for the season?

One more stray thought, these are just some Easter eggs I noticed but this episode seemingly confirmed Robin's existence in the Arrowverse and if so, where has he gone? Kate also mentions Wonder Woman at another point when confronted about being Batwoman; saying she would more likely dress as Wonder Woman. So, Wonder Woman is in this universe too? Sounds like some deserving cameos!
