Batwoman S01 EP06 spoiler review

Batman has an incredible history of famous and not so famous villains that I hope the Batwoman show will take full advantage of throughout however many seasons it gets. We've had a couple already, but this week we got another with the Executioner, a small time villain in the comics who has made their second live action debut following Gotham. It was a fun episode, but definitely a step down from the brilliance of last week.

Like I mentioned, the characters were dealing with a masked menace murdering court members. It turns out that one of those officials was the man who helped put away the man who murdered Luke's dad, Lucius Fox! Lucius Fox is confirmed dead in this continuity, so now team ups between him and his son I suppose. The news broadcast talking about the man's murder also mentioned that he had put away Jack Napier, The JOKER!!! Joker has finally been confirmed for this world, and people know his true identity it seems. There was also a mention of "Mayor Cobblepot" later in the episode; these villain teases come fast and hard on this show.

Other parts of the episode involved Sophie, firmly believing that Kate is Batwoman, making it her personal task to track down Batwoman and ended up injured, then brought to Mary's secret clinic by Batwoman after an attack by the Executioner. By the end of the episode, Sophie resigned not to reveal Kate's identity, at least not yet.

Beth and Mouse were on a quest to steal a gun from Hamilton industries that was capable of blasting through Batwoman's armor (I'm pretty sure Hush had one of those), and it involved Mouse wearing a human mask to impersonate one of the employees in the facility. The heist worked, but telling that Beth was very focused on Kate, he called Beth using Kate's voice, leading Beth to reveal to Mouse that her sister was Batwoman. A scene followed with Mouse very distraught over Beth seemingly treating him like just a crime partner when he saw them as brother and sister, more than Beth and her own sister. He emphasized how he had treated her when she was locked in his father's basement, and I get where he is coming from because it sounds like a lot of his life was built around her and meeting up again, only for her to seem more drawn towards her sister who wants to change her back to her she was before. It is a nice dynamic between the two, but I can't help but feel like Mouse will end up getting the short stick and be killed randomly; it is hard to tell whether or not Beth actually cares about him, but I would like her too.

The resolution to the Executioner's storyline came when it was revealed that he was only killing corrupt lawmakers who had spent years putting away innocent men, and while the Executioner was killed by Jacob Kane saving Batwoman, every case by those lawmakers was reopened for evaluation meaning that justice will be served after all. This episode also saw Jacob Kane leaning into the anti-Batwoman stance, and during the end of the episode when he and Batwoman were trying to escape the poisonous gas Executioner rigged to fill the room, he confessed that he hates the Bat symbol because if it doesn't blame it for his family's death, he has to blame himself since he stopped searching. I thought that was a really powerful moment for the character, and his hug later in the episode with Kate was an awesome moment, and just like Joe West in Flash, I feel like the father/detective figure on the show, Jacob Kane, is also one of the best characters.
