Batwoman S01 EP05 spoiler review
Batwoman is wasting no time in plowing through story and already we're learning about how the girl called Alice took on this darker persona. There's still plenty of that story to be told, but we got a great chunk of it this week and it also provided for what I think is the best episode so far this season!

The beginning of the episode saw Kate tracking down Alice and taking her hostage, starting them on their journey to unravel Alice's background and exactly what happened to her after the car crash; who she went missing. In order to tell her story, Alice insists that they go on the road, and from there on we get a string of great flashbacks. Turns out she was picked up on the side of a river by a man and his son, and I immediately knew something was going to be wrong because the man claims he called the police, but we know that Beth was never found. Turns out that the man is a complete psycho and insists on her staying in order to be a friend to his facially disfigured young son, who the man literally collects faces from victims for to try out as a mask to cover the deformity. Everything about the entire line of events was unnerving, uncomfortable, and the actor who played the father was great in the role. Very evil in a subtle, scary way. Beth ends up spending most of her time down in a room in the basement, locked away, talking with Mouse (the son) whenever he came by to visit. One day though Beth managed to get out of the room, and call her father before the man interrupted her, ended the call, and sternly told her that anyone who came looking for her he would kill. This lead to one of the most emotionally devastating scenes I've seen int eh CW Arrowverse, as shortly after the call was made, it reveals that a younger Kate and Jacob both came to the house in response after tracking it. The man in the home uses his son's ability to mimic other people's voices in order to make Jacob believe it was just a trick on his son's part, while Kate actually enters the basement, finds the door Beth is behind, and calls out to her sister...but because of the man's threat Beth doesn't say anything. It was hard to watch and know that they were so close to finding her, that everything happening in present day could have been avoided, but it didn't happen that way. Kate remembered that day, going to that home, and Alice is bitter that her sister wasn't able to sense somehow that her twin sister was right there. During the story telling, Alice managed to drug and kidnap Kate, flipping the sides, and left her sister locked up in the same room she was locked in as a child. Kate managed to escape though just as her father arrived after tracking them, and he finally accept that Alice is Beth, his daughter, who then promptly stabs him and leaves him as she and a now grown up Mouse elope back to Gotham. One final flashback scene shows Mouse as a child given Beth the Alice in Wonderland book, no doubt starting her obsession with the story.
Elsewhere in the episode we watched Mary come to the realization that her mother lied about Beth's death, which lead her to Wayne tower looking for Kate and instead had a long heart to heart with Luke who was less than enthusiastic to be her therapist. They were a fun duo to watch together and I think it would be fun to see more of the two!
Overall, definitely one of the most emotionally riveting and story informed episodes so far! I'm interested to find out what happened to Mouse's father and Beth's captor, hopefully he got what he deserved; because Beth obviously escaped somehow.
