Top 5 favorite Transformers Studio Series figures of 2019

2019 is wrapping up to a close and with it comes the end of the second year of the Transformers Studio Series toyline. It is still crazy to me that we'll have had two full years with this toyline at this point, and year two certainly gave us several highly awaited fan favorites that I was very happy to get in the line. 2020 is already shaping up to be the best year for Studio Series yet, but before that, I'm going to take some time and appreciate my top five favorite figures from the line for 2019!

5. Leader class Optimus
Starting off is the leader class Optimus Prime figure based off of Dark of the Moon. I love the approach they took with this figure, as it implements the full trailer in order to reach that leader class price point; however, while I love everything this figure did, it did have some things that bugged me. Most of all is the total lack of paint on the trailer and the weapons aside from scant applications, it really brings the overall look of the figure down, even if it was a nearly perfect representation of Prime in this movie series.

4. Car mode Dropkick
I was not a fan of the Dropkick that we got from the first year of Studio Series. Some people found it fun and liked the alt mode, but I want more than anything for my figures to look they they're supposed to. Helicopter Dropkick bared barely any similarity to the on screen character, but with the release of the line's second Dropkick that was completely rectified. While not representing his look for the most of the movie, the car mode of Dropkick was a dead ringer for the Dropkick we saw after he first scanned his car form. The transformation is also highly complex and involved that makes for an extremely good looking alt mode and robot mode.

3. Sideswipe
First off, I want to mention that going with the DOTM variation of the character was brilliant because it minimizes the potential kibble since Sideswipe lost his car roof for that film. Overall, I love this figure. Sideswipe has been captured perfectly, and so many pieces of this figure work all over. The articulated car wings, adjustable chest pieces, and the inclusion of both the swords and the guns that are both capable of storage in both robot mode, AND car mode (rather cleverly in car mode as well), make for a really well rounded figure that captures Sideswipe's on screen appearance.

2. Bonecrusher
From the start of the line, Bonecrusher was my number one most anticipated and wanted figure and with the first wave of this year we finally got a proper voyager class scaled Bonecrusher! Some have said that he is too small, but I think he is perfect as is and scales just right with the other characters. His hunchbacked appearance lends to this shorter stature, but he more than makes up for it in overall bulk, along with the design cues I love about the character that translated over. The elongated, clawed arms; the roller blades on the end of his feet, and the massive claw protruding from his back were all included. I couldn't be happier with how this Bonecrusher figure turned out and it is a magnificent upgrade from the 2007 deluxe.

1. Constructicons
This slot comes as a bit of a cheat, but I can't help but include all four of the Constructicons we got at the top of my list. I love the Constructicons as a sub group and especially in the movie verse where they're all very unique and distinct. So I was more than thrilled when Hasbro announced that Studio Series would be doing a full team of 8 Constructicons that would also combine with one another to form Devastator! The first half of the team came out this year, consisting of Scrapmetal, Rampage, Hightower, and Long Haul; and all are them are absolute delights! All are loaded with molded details, and the current progression towards Devastator is looking very nice. I was very impressed with Hasbro's ability to capture the look of Rampage's pogo leg, getting Scrapmetal based off his concept art rather than just being a Scrapper clone was a pleasant surprise, I was ecstatic to get Hightower who is even wilder than his concept art that he was based off of, but the clear winner for me is Long Haul who I consider one of the best figures in the entire line!
