Batwoman S01 EP08 spoiler review

Before Crisis starts next week, we're getting the proper midseason finales for all of the shows and Batwoman's was one we got with a really stellar episode that really shook the foundation of the show and what all the characters are going through. It is episodes like these I really love, ones that throw a boulder into the status quo and change things completely after all the characterization and set up is complete. So with my excitement for the show renewed ten fold, here is my review of Batwoman's 8th episode!

Returning from his investigation outside of Gotham, Jacob Kane is captured by Alice while Mouse continues to impersonate him in the Crows headquarters, now with plenty of Alice's goons acting as Crows as well. This all gears up for nothing good as a special gala is being hosted in the city to commemorate Hamilton industries accomplishments. Prior to that big showdown at the end of the episode, we get quite a few character interactions. Mary confronts Kate about why she continuously sticks up for Alice who is a criminal, leading to Kate arguing that Alice is her family. Very cruelly, it insinuates that Mary is not Kate's family despite them being step sisters for years, and Mary catches this as much as Kate tries to explain around that. There's also more scenes of Kate interacting with Alice, with Alice cluing the hero in to the fact that Jacob is actually missing and that the Jacob present in Gotham is a fake. She alerts Sophie too late though, as Mouse disguised as Jacob incapacitates her and her husband before setting out with his own band of Crows for the gala that evening.

Things really escalate as Catherine Hamilton took the stage to accept her award and began to read her speech off of the podium monitor, though the speech is hijacked by Alice. The villain informs Catherine through the messages that she will kill everyone if Catherine doesn't read the new speech Alice wrote, in which it is revealed the horrid deeds that Hamilton industries has conducted with creating mass weapons that criminals use. Catherine becomes dizzy, her nose starts to bleed, and then she collapses on the floor leading fake Jacob and Mary to carry her backstage while Alice makes herself known on the main stage, causing the crowd to panic. Kate arrives in Batwoman apparel, throwing down with goons to fight her way to Alice, but the really great scene of the episode occurred backstage with Mary and Catherine. It turned out that Alice poisoned Catherine prior to the start of the speech, with a poison that Hamilton industries made that had no cure aside from what Alice concocted herself. She forced Catherine to apologize and truly regret the choice she made to trick Jacob into thinking his daughter was dead, and just as Alice was giving Catherine the cure it turned out that Mary had been poisoned as well. It was heart wrenching to first see Mary begging for Alice to give the cure to her mother, and then for Mary to have to accept the cure knowing that her mother would die, there being only enough for one person. Both actors did a really good job with that scene, and while previously I didn't care much for Catherine's character I did feel sad that she died.

Batwoman confronted Alice before losing her, and then found that Catherine had died by Alice's hand. At the same time, Jacob was arrested by the cops after being framed by Mouse as having a part in the gala's horrible events. Kate visited her father in prison, announcing that she now hates Alice, and will bring her down the next chance she gets. On another note, Sophie also pretty much is now separated from her husband who got her to basically admit that she still has feelings for Kate. Overall, the episode offered a lot of change for the rest of the season! Jacob is behind bars, Mary is estranged from Kate after Alice killed her mother, Sophie is now single and ready to mingle with Kate, and Kate herself has vowed to take down Alice instead of trying to bring her sister back. But before they handle any of that, next week we have a Crisis to attend to!
