Top 5 favorite MCU villains from phases 1-3

The MCU had a long road to Endgame and through those couple dozen movies we got lots of different villains that the heroes fought through their journey. Some were great, some were forgettable, some were bad, but some were awesome. Some have been remembered by fans years after they debuted, ranked as some of the best comic book movie villains of all time. Here I'll be looking at the top 5 that stuck out to me most in the MCU's first three phases as my favorite villains of the Infinity Saga.

5. Loki
This was the villain that started it all when the Avengers rolled around. He's arguably the villain with the most appearances in the series as he appeared in three Avengers movies, and three Thor films. Loki was first introduced as a hero but quickly became the villain of the first Thor film and gave us a layered villain who had to learn that he was the same creature that his kind were at war with. Along with that, he struggled with knowing that he would never be able to be king and please his father that way Thor did. Loki was a broken, charismatic villain who won fans over up until his untimely death by Thanos.

4. Vulture
Spiderman's introduction to the MCU was celebrated by fans everywhere, and his first solo film managed to also give us one of the best villains the series had seen so far. Vulture was introduced in the film's opening sequence as an every man who had just lost his job and was looking for a way to support his family. That set him as not truly a bad guy, and we got to see this in the rest of the film as he never tried to kill anyone, and even protected Peter's identity form those who obviously wanted to kill Spiderman. The homecoming scene in which Peter and Toomes discover each other's identities is one of the best, most tense scenes in the MCU in my opinion, and each of their confrontation were epic.

3. Mysterio
Following Vulture, we got Mysterio who completely blew me away. Jake Gyllenhaal played the character perfectly, who was first introduced as a hero who was later revealed as a lying con man and ultimate villain of the movie. While he was on the side of the heroes, Beck was a charismatic, funny, touching ally of Peter's that made he villain reveal hurt more. As a villain, he maintained the same energy and gave us a spectacular villain who messed with our hero's reality, and ultimately impacted Peter's life in a way that no other villain will ever be able to. The first real fight between the two was also one of the best fights in the MCU, as the illusions created a wholly unique, visually compelling fight between the two.

2. Zemo
While drastically different from the comics, Zemo was a magnificent villain Civil War in my opinion and I loved everything about this character. After his family was killed as causalities of the conflict between the Avengers and Ultron, Zemo sought to destroy the Avengers and did so without ever fighting them himself. He tore the Avengers apart from the inside, masterfully manipulating both sides of the conflict until it brought everything to a head at the end of the movie. Him listening to a message left by his wife before her death gave the character more layers than any villain monologue every could, and I'm so glad that the character is still alive so that he can appear again in the universe. Not to mention that in the end he did tear the Avengers apart; he won.

1. Thanos
Speaking of villains who won, at least initially, Thanos was the big bad of the whole infinity saga and for the final two Avengers films in the series. What other villain could have taken this top spot? The character was basically the main character of Infinity War, with many scenes revolving around him or involving him in some manner. While his screen time was scarcer in Endgame, he was still provided as a terrifying, powerful villain that the Avengers had to fight til their last breath to defeat. Thanos' view on the galaxy and the means through which he went to accomplish his goals solidified this character as the best villains of the MCU and one of the best comic book movie villains of all time. The MCU will have their hands full trying to top this one in the future.
