Sonic the Hedgehog 3 taking the top spot on my list of favorite 2024 movies should tell you all you need to know about what I thought of the incredible conclusion to Sonic's first movie trilogy. It was a hilarious and emotional delight from start to finish, with Shadow the Hedgehog one of the sickest film characters of the year to debut, and Gerald and Ivo stealing every single scene they appeared in. The film also gave us a lot of what I was hoping to see between Shadow's videogame accurate backstory, the results of Jim Carrey's retirement handled (he came out of retirement!), and we kind of got the Chao by way of the Japanese restaurant.
SPOILERS ahead for the post credit scene at the end of the film, which also gifted us with the live action debuts of both Metal Sonic and Amy setting up what is sure to be an incredible fourth entry in the series by 2027. I'm not expecting Chaos in the fourth film just based on the direction the post credit scene seems to be heading, but there are lots of other pieces of the Sonic mythos I'm hoping to see brought to the big screen, and this list will count down my top 5 most wanted things I hope to see in Sonic the Hedgehog 4!
5. Rouge the Bat
Amy and Metal Sonic will probably be enough new characters for the movie to revolve around, but if there is any other character's added to the film's roster I would not mind seeing Rouge the Bat brought into the fray. GUN has become a major figure in the series, and the character of Rockwell would be a perfect companion for Rouge to play off of. Again, I won't be surprised if she does not appear in the film, but as the next biggest Sonic character yet to make their film debut I'm anticipating the day she finally does.
4. Emperor Eggman
Sonic fans lit up with delight when concept art of what was likely the original post credit scene was released days ago. What is showed us was an Emperor Eggman commanding what looks to be a dystopian future with Metal Sonic by his side! This would be such an exciting role to see Jim Carrey have fun with, and a striking new position for Robotnik to take in the films to differentiate his roles in the prior three.
3. Amy's role in the movie
We'll have to wait a while to find out exactly what role Amy is playing in the movie and what connection she has to the Metal Sonic army she appeared alongside, but the swift manner in which she dispatched the group gives me hope that we'll see an Amy who is active in the battles and not just a damsel in distress. Many times she has been pictured as the girl who hopelessly loves Sonic, but a great twist would see Sonic fawning over her with how cool she is and her trying to keep him focused on the mission of the movie. Those behind the films have said already that they held off on including Amy previously because they did not want her to just be a side character, which further anticipates seeing her take on a central role in the events of the upcoming movie.
2. Metal Sonic's other forms
Metal Sonic's role in the movie is going to be another very interesting one to see handled, especially as he doesn't appear to be a single entity but instead of a whole fleet of robots. With a more mass produced army role it gives me hope that we can see more of Metal Sonic's designs from the videogames brought to life in live action as other units in the Metal Sonic armada, along with the various Mecha Sonics, ranging from Silver Sonic to both Mecha Sonics marks 1 and 2 . It would also be sick to see one Metal Sonic that rules over all the others and that to be Neo Metal Sonic!
1. Sonic CD's time travel plot
The inclusion of both Amy and Metal Sonic along with the concept art teasing an Emperor Eggman ruling a dystopian future is raising all my detective intuition to guess that we'll be seeing some form of the Sonic CD plot brought to the live action film frontier. This game saw time travel incorporated as a tool with Sonic and Eggman traveling through time from the past to the future which would be a bonkers next step for the films to follow. With the third film going full sci fy between Robotnik's cannon and Sonic and Shadow's Super duel across the planet, time travel is within the realm of possibility at this point and I'd be beyond happy to see this plot faithfully adapted.
